John Mahama Considers Dr. Ato Forson for Finance Minister Amid Ghana’s Economic Challenges

President-Elect John Dramani Mahama is reportedly weighing Dr. Cassiel Ato Forson for the position of Finance Minister in his upcoming administration, according to sources cited by Bloomberg.

According to Ghana Web on Sunday, December 15, 2024, Forson, an experienced accountant with an extensive academic background, previously held the role of deputy finance minister during Mahama’s prior administration.

The President-Elect is expected to announce his cabinet after his inauguration on January 7, 2024, following his decisive victory in the December 7 elections.

However, while sources familiar with the matter have shared details of Forson’s potential appointment, it has not been officially confirmed.

Dr. Forson holds a degree in taxation from the University of Oxford and a doctorate in finance from the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology.

His qualifications, along with his political experience, make him a strong contender for the position.

Currently, Forson is leading the National Democratic Congress (NDC) caucus in parliament and has spent over eight years as a member of the Finance Committee, where he has been an outspoken advocate for state spending transparency.

The finance minister’s role will be pivotal for Ghana’s recovery as the country grapples with significant economic challenges. These include high inflation, which has remained above 20% for over two years, and a mounting national debt.

The government’s efforts to stabilize the economy, including a $3 billion bailout from the International Monetary Fund in 2022, will depend heavily on the new finance minister’s actions.
