Sam George [L] and Miracle Aboagye
It is widely believed that most politicians are, in fact, friends behind the scenes, and their public rivalries are often more theatrical than genuine.
Many suggest that politicians, regardless of their affiliations, maintain cordial relationships and share meals and drinks out of the public eye. Meanwhile, they use crafted narratives to keep the poor and middle class distracted and divided.
In Ghana, two young, intelligent politicians who exemplify this friedship are Sam George, the National Democratic Congress (NDC) Member of Parliament for Ningo-Prampram, and Dennis Miracle Aboagye, spokesperson for the New Patriotic Party (NPP) Flagbearer, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign in the recently concluded elections.
The mutual respect and cordial relationship between these two were evident during a meeting at an Accra-based radio station. During their interaction, Sam George, a staunch loyalist of the President-elect, humorously teased Miracle Aboagye, predicting a prolonged period of opposition for him and his party. However, he quickly added a playful assurance:
“You will stay in opposition for 16 years. But you are my brother; I will take care of you. Just that, if you open your mouth and criticize John Mahama, I will personally find you and give you a knock,” Sam George said with a grin.
In response, Miracle Aboagye laughed and made it clear that he would remain critical of the Mahama-led government, just as Sam George has been vocal about the outgoing Akufo-Addo-Bawumia administration.
“I should not talk when you are in government? I will be as critical as you are,” Miracle Aboagye replied, with a lighthearted tone.
