Andy Appiah-Kubi, the Member of Parliament for Asante-Akim North, has stirred debate by suggesting that Ken Ofori-Atta, Ghana’s former Finance Minister, wielded more power than President Nana Akufo-Addo during his tenure as per reports from MyNewsGH on Saturday, December 14, 2024.
In a candid discussion on Accra-based TV3, Appiah-Kubi claimed that Ofori-Atta often disregarded advice and did not acknowledge the authority of others in government.
“The President could give him orders, but Ofori-Atta often acted according to his own judgment, not the President’s,” Appiah-Kubi said.
He further criticized Ofori-Atta’s approach to governance, citing that instead of engaging with Vice President Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia, the head of the economic management committee, it was Bawumia who had to visit Ofori-Atta in his office.
This, Appiah-Kubi argues, disrupted the country’s economic management and led to a deteriorating economic situation.
According to Appiah-Kubi, this power imbalance undermined the leadership structure and contributed to economic challenges.
He stated that Ofori-Atta’s reluctance to cooperate with key figures in government was a significant factor in the country’s economic struggles.
On his own political journey, Appiah-Kubi also shared a personal anecdote. He recounted how Dr. Bawumia once claimed credit for his rise to power, but Appiah-Kubi dismissed this, saying, “I told him my friend, sit down. I did not see your hand in me getting power.”
This interaction, he revealed, was the catalyst for his advocacy and his role as a spokesperson for the group.
