Dennis Miracles Aboagye, a key member of Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia’s campaign team, has admitted being deeply surprised by the outcome of Ghana’s 2024 general elections as reported by Ghana Web on Friday, December 13, 2024.
The National Democratic Congress (NDC), led by John Dramani Mahama, claimed a decisive victory that, according to Aboagye, defied his expectations.
Speaking during an interview with GHOne TV on December 13, Aboagye expressed his disbelief at the margin of defeat suffered by the New Patriotic Party (NPP). “The outcome of the election results was a big shock to me, particularly due to the margin,” he said.
The Electoral Commission’s declaration on December 9 revealed that Mahama secured 6,328,397 votes, representing 56.55%, while Dr. Bawumia trailed with 4,657,304 votes, or 41.61%.
The loss extended to Parliament, where the NPP saw significant setbacks, losing key constituencies and prominent MPs such as Ursula Owusu-Ekuful, Henry Quartey, and KT Hammond.
Aboagye attributed the NPP’s defeat to a miscalculation of public sentiment.
While reflecting on the party’s performance, he suggested that the government may have underestimated the frustration of the Ghanaian populace.
He acknowledged that this oversight likely played a significant role in the party’s poor showing at the polls.
