Independent Member of Parliament-elect for the Gomoa Central Constituency Kwame Asare Obeng popularly known as Kwame A-Plus advocates for the term of office of a president of Ghana to be extended to six years.
In line with the Constituency of the country, a president holds office for four years before an election is conducted to renew or reject his mandate. A president can hold a maximum of two terms.
There have been calls from high-profile personalities, including Former President John Agyekum Kufour, for the period to be extended. Proponents of this school of thought argue that it will afford a president enough time to implement long-term transformational policies which will be crucial to the developmental goals of the country.
In a Facebook post, the newly elected Member of Parliament has joined the clarion call, urging Parliament to amend the constitution of the country to have the period moved beyond four years.
According to him, a successful extension of the term of office of the president will mean President-elect John Dramani Mahama of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) will govern the country up till 2030.
This way, the New Patriotic Party, who in his estimation have performed abysmally in government, will remain in opposition for at least twelve years.
“As Members of Parliament we must amend the presidential term to six years so that the NPP will be in opposition for twelve years,” he posted.

Kwame A-Plus proved the bookmakers wrong by snatching the seat from the NPP. He is one of the three independent candidates that will be sworn into the 9th Parliament.
