Ghana Elects John Mahama Amidst Economic Turmoil

The political atmosphere of Ghana vibrated with intensity on December 11, 2024, following the announcement of the presidential election results. The Electoral Commission declared John Dramani Mahama the winner of the highly contested election, which unfolded on December 7. Mahama, representing the National Democratic Congress (NDC), secured 56.55% of the votes, totaling approximately 6.3 million, marking one of the most decisive victories since Ghana returned to democratic rule.

His primary opponent, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia of the New Patriotic Party (NPP), garnered only 41.61% of the votes with roughly 4.6 million, reflecting a significant shift in voter sentiment. This election has been described by many analysts as nothing short of historical, echoing phrases like “a tsunami of civil uprising” as it expressed widespread public frustration with the incumbent government.
