It Is Not The End – Afenyo-Markin Finally Breaks Silence After NPP’s Heavy Election Defeat

Alexander Afenyo-Markin, the Majority Leader and Member of Parliament for Effutu, has spoken out following the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) defeat in the 2024 general elections. The National Democratic Congress (NDC) emerged victorious with an impressive 56.55% of the votes, marking a historic achievement as their highest presidential election gain since 1996. Alongside this triumph, the NDC is set to secure at least 180 seats in Parliament, giving them a significant majority.

Addressing the loss, Afenyo-Markin acknowledged the disappointment among NPP members and supporters. He admitted that losing parliamentary seats was painful but emphasized that this setback does not define the party’s identity or future. Reflecting on the fluctuating nature of politics, he said, “In 2016, we had a resounding victory, and today, we find ourselves on the other side of the equation. It’s a reminder that elections are a part of the process, not the conclusion.”

After his own re-election, Afenyo-Markin addressed the media, highlighting that political dynamics can change dramatically over time. While the results are difficult to accept, he stressed that they should be seen as an opportunity for reflection and growth. “The result stings, and I know it hurts. But we must remember that this is not the end of the journey. As a party, we will regroup, reassess, and strategize to win the hearts of Ghanaians once again,” he added, demonstrating his commitment to rebuilding the NPP.

The Effutu MP also urged respect for the will of the people, emphasizing that the election results reflect the choices of voters. “If the electorate has decided to place their trust in the NDC this time around, we must honour that decision,” he stated. This call for grace and respect underscores the essence of democracy, which requires acceptance of electoral outcomes.

Despite the setback, Afenyo-Markin expressed optimism for the NPP’s future. He believes this election is a valuable lesson, urging the party to learn, rebuild, and work hard to regain public trust and support in upcoming elections. His words convey hope and determination to overcome challenges and continue the NPP’s political journey. .
