Ghana Votes To Choose New President Amid Economic Struggles

Ghana’s political scene recently saw tension and excitement as the nation prepared for its presidential elections on December 7, 2024. The ballot was hotly contested between Vice-President Mahamudu Bawumia of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) and the former President John Mahama, representing the opposition National Democratic Congress (NDC). With President Nana Akufo-Addo stepping down after two terms, the stakes were undeniably high.

The election unfolded against the backdrop of significant economic distress. Ghana, known for its production of gold and cocoa, has grappled with inflation rates reaching unprecedented levels, including a peak of over 50% last year. The government has navigated through a debt default, all the whilst negotiating for financial assistance amounting to around $3 billion from the International Monetary Fund (IMF). These economic challenges were at the forefront of voters’ minds as they approached the polls.
