John Dramani Mahama, the presidential candidate for the National Democratic Congress (NDC), has raised serious concerns about the actions of the Electoral Commission (EC) ahead of the December 7 general elections as reported by Citinewsroom on Friday, December 6, 2024.
In a Facebook post on Friday, December 6, Mahama accused the EC of attempting to manipulate the election process in favor of the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP).
With just a day to go before voters head to the polls, Mahama warned that the EC’s actions were part of a broader plot to rig the elections. “With less than 24 hours to go, it has become obvious that the Electoral Commission is determined to aid the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rig the elections,” he wrote.
The former president specifically pointed to a series of reports from the NDC regarding the exposure of validating stamps.
These stamps, Mahama claims, have been improperly disclosed by EC officials, giving undue advantage to the NPP.
According to Mahama, this exposure allows for the potential production of counterfeit ballots with identical validating stamps, which could undermine the integrity of the election.
“Since Thursday night, the National Democratic Congress has reported several cases of exposed Validating Stamps to the Commission,” Mahama continued.
He emphasized that despite these reports, the EC has failed to take swift action to prevent such disclosures.
“Yet they have refused to issue a clear and unambiguous directive to stop their staff from disclosing the identities and details of the validating stamps ahead of tomorrow’s general elections.”
Mahama also called on various groups and organizations, including the National Peace Council, civil society groups, religious leaders, and international observers, to intervene.
“I call on the National Peace Council, Religious and Traditional Leaders, Civil Society, the International Community, and the Election Observer Missions to call the Electoral Commission to order,” he urged.
