Opposition leaders, including former President and NDC flag bearer John Dramani Mahama, have accused the Electoral Commission (EC) of conspiring with the ruling New Patriotic Party (NPP) to rig the results of Ghana’s 2024 general elections. The EC’s decision to prohibit political party agents from keeping an eye on the voter transfer procedure has been cited by Mahama as a serious red flag. He claims that this action opens the door for possible voter data tampering in favor of the NPP.

Mahama has further charged that the NPP is using gerrymandering to obtain an advantage in parliamentary elections, claiming that the party’s activities are a response to its waning support. He has warned that attempts to sabotage the voting process will fail and asked the EC to uphold its neutrality mandate.

Other opposition figures, including as Emmanuel Armah-Kofi Buah, the deputy minority leader of the NDC, share these worries. Buah claimed the voter registration lacked openness and integrity and called for an independent examination during the “Enough is Enough” protests. He made it clear that unless the EC resolved their complaints, the resistance would not stop.

However, the EC has defended its decision to exclude party agents, stating that it was necessary to keep the peace and avoid violent altercations at transfer centers. Opposition supporters claim that such actions jeopardize Ghana’s democracy, and this explanation hasn’t done much to allay their concerns.

Calls for justice and openness are intensifying as the election draws near, and civil society organizations are pleading with the EC to maintain its impartiality. Widespread discussions have been triggered by the accusations, and there are worries that if these problems are not settled before the election, the legitimacy of the process may be jeopardized.

This dispute emphasizes how important it is to have transparent election procedures in order to preserve public confidence and guarantee a peaceful democratic process.
