Kwesi Nyantakyi, former President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), remains optimistic about the Black Stars’ chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup.
According to a report by News Ghana, however, he stresses the need for significant changes to improve the team’s performance.
Speaking on Lawson TV, Nyantakyi acknowledged the team’s challenges but expressed hope. “I don’t think all is lost, but we must fix it,” he stated. Referring to the World Cup qualifiers in March against Chad and Madagascar, he added, “The right players will have to be called for these games.”
Nyantakyi emphasized the importance of revitalizing Ghana’s youth teams and facilitating their transition to the senior side. “We need to revamp the youth teams and focus on their transition to the senior side to strengthen the Black Stars,” he explained.
He cited Ghana’s U-20 team, which won the 2009 World Cup in Egypt, as an example of successful integration. “This integration boosted the chances of the Black Stars, helping them reach the finals of the 2010 Africa Cup of Nations in Angola and almost making it to the semi-finals of the 2010 FIFA World Cup in South Africa,” he noted.
He emphasized that replicating such success requires strategic player selection and commitment. “It should not be the normal call-ups but players who are ready and dedicated to play for the country and the shirt,” Nyantakyi concluded.
