Manasseh Azure Questions Akufo-Addo Statue Using Samira Bawumia’s Words

Manasseh Azure Awuni has sparked debate with a pointed Facebook post about the recently unveiled statue of President Nana Akufo-Addo, referencing a 2016 critique by Samira Bawumia.
In her speech at the time, Samira strongly criticized the ruling party, stating, “We see you, but we see bad governance. We see you, but we want change.” Her words underscored the frustrations many felt with the NDC government and became emblematic of the need for a fresh, accountable administration.
Azure’s post comes as Ghanaians are increasingly vocal about economic and governance concerns. By quoting Samira’s 2016 remarks, Azure draws attention to what some see as a dissonance between the NPP’s campaign promises and its actual governance. Azure’s comments raise questions about whether a statue for the president reflects the immediate needs of citizens struggling with rising costs of living, employment challenges, and concerns about corruption.
Many Ghanaians echoed Azure’s sentiments, with social media flooded with comments questioning the timing and intent of the statue. Rather than seeing a tribute to the president, they see a moment to re-evaluate promises made by the NPP and hold leadership accountable to the aspirations that fueled their victory in 2016.
Through Samira’s own words, Azure’s post serves as a call for introspection, urging the administration to address citizens’ needs rather than focusing on symbolic achievements.
