Joyce Bawah Mogtari, Special Aide to former President John Dramani Mahama, has criticized Dr. Matthew Opoku Prempeh, the 2024 running mate for the New Patriotic Party (NPP), for his recent remarks urging Ghanaian Muslims to refrain from voting for John Mahama as reported by Adomonline on Sunday, November 10, 2024.
She described his comments as “unguarded” and suggested that such political rhetoric should avoid religious, ethnic, or tribal tones that could undermine national unity.
The comments came after a video surfaced of Dr. Prempeh addressing Muslim communities during his campaign tour in northern Ghana.
In the video, he allegedly encouraged Muslims to vote for Vice President Mahamudu Bawumia instead of John Mahama, citing Mahama’s non-Muslim status as a reason not to support him.
During a media interaction on the first day of John Mahama’s tour of the Central Region, Joyce Bawah Mogtari expressed her concerns, saying, “Let me say something about the NPP’s running mate.
I think he is a loose talker, I think he needs some coaching, and I think he needs to grow up a little bit more. I also think he needs to appreciate the sensibilities of our society.”
Mogtari went further to accuse Dr. Opoku Prempeh of displaying arrogance and ignorance since his nomination as running mate.
“Napo has exhibited enormous arrogance and ignorance since his nomination as running mate. I shudder to think what else he is going to be saying next,” she said.
The former President’s aide also questioned Dr. Prempeh’s qualifications for the vice-presidency, suggesting that his controversial statements pointed to a lack of preparation for such a high office.
“It is obvious that he has nothing to offer the NPP. Let’s also try as much as possible to vet the people we nominate for high office. Since he was nominated, from the very first day, all the missteps largely tell us that he is not ready for high office,” Joyce Bawah Mogtari added.
