When refueling at a gas station, some individuals may unknowingly fall victim to scams. Fraudsters may secretly swap the fuel nozzle with a lower-grade option or manipulate the meter to inflate the price. Additionally, they might use diversions to add unnecessary items to your bill or overcharge for services. It’s a startling reality, but one we must acknowledge. To avoid being taken advantage of, it’s crucial to remain alert and double-check the fuel meter, verify the amount, and speak up if you notice any discrepancies.
A fuel attendant recently in a video posted on TikTok has revealed how his fellow colleagues scam customers when they’re buying fuel. These tricks include switching the fuel nozzle to a lower-grade fuel, tampering with the meter to show more fuel dispensed than actual, rounding down the amount, and using distractions to add extra items or overcharge for services. The “Old Switcheroo” involves switching the nozzle to a lower-grade fuel, pocketing the difference, so you may be paying for premium fuel but getting regular fuel instead. Additionally, “Meter Manipulation” involves tampering with the meter to show more fuel dispensed, leading to overcharging for fuel you never received, highlighting the need for vigilance to avoid being taken advantage of.
