President Nana Addo Dankwa Akufo-Addo has reaffirmed his commitment to a fair and peaceful transition of power in Ghana’s upcoming December 7, 2024, general elections. Speaking at the Anlo Hogbetsotso Za festival on Friday, November 2, the president addressed the nation on his intentions to honor the democratic process and hand over leadership to whichever candidate the people elect. This assurance comes at a time when the president faces increased scrutiny following statements some have perceived as showing partiality towards his vice president and party’s presidential candidate, Dr. Mahamudu Bawumia.
Addressing the gathered chiefs, dignitaries, and citizens, Akufo-Addo underscored the importance of peace, emphasizing that Ghana’s stability and development rely heavily on a smooth electoral process. “As we all know, without peace, there can be no proper development. The peace we are currently enjoying is the peace that we will carry through to the elections on 7th December,” the president stated. He went on to reassure Ghanaians, particularly the people of Anlo and the Volta Region, that the 2024 election would be conducted in a manner that upholds transparency and fairness. “I want to assure the people of Anlo, the people of the Volta Region, and the people of Ghana that the forthcoming elections in December are going to be free, fair, transparent, and peaceful.”
In a pivotal part of his address, Akufo-Addo confirmed that he would transfer power to the candidate chosen by the people, saying, “On the 7th of December, I will hand over the baton of national leadership to whoever the people of Ghana choose to succeed me.” He also expressed heartfelt gratitude to the Anlo community and Ghanaians nationwide for their continuous support and prayers during his presidency.
