Ghana’s first Olympic medalist Clement Quartey dies in London

Accra, Nov. 3, GNA – Ghanaian boxing legend Clement Isaac Quartey has passed on at the age of 86. 

Clement Quartey, born on April 12, 1938, died in the early hours of Saturday, November 2, 2024, in London, United Kingdom. He earned Ghana’s first Olympic medal.   

Clement Quartey is the older brother of former World Boxing Association (WBA) welterweight champion Ike ‘Bazooka’ Quartey. 

Clement Quartey competed in the lightweight event at the 1960 Rome Olympics, winning silver after losing to Bohumil Nemeecek of Czechoslovakia. 

He is the only Olympic silver-medalist from Ghana, with the likes of Eddie Blay, Prince Amartey, and Samuel Takyi winning bronze medals at various Olympics. 

He was survived by his two children, Clifton and Alex Quartey.
