Africa’s mismanagement of natural resources ‘tragic’ – Mike Oquaye

Former Speaker of Parliament, Prof. Aaron Mike Oquaye, has expressed deep concern over Africa’s handling of its natural resources, describing the situation as “tragic”—particularly the continent’s underutilization of solar energy.

Speaking at the 50th anniversary celebration of the Christian Service University in Kumasi on Friday, Prof. Oquaye highlighted Africa’s failure to capitalize on its abundant natural resources for sustainable development.

He pointed to solar power as a key opportunity that has been largely neglected.

“The way Africa is dealing with natural resources which God has endowed us with is very tragic,” Prof Oquaye said, adding, “The BBC reported recently that solar energy production in the Netherlands is higher than the whole of Africa put together and Africa is the home of the sun. God will not be happy with this,” he stated.

Prof. Oquaye urged leaders to take decisive action to tap into Africa’s vast solar potential and invest in renewable energy solutions that could drive long-term growth and sustainability.
