EU evacuates eight urgent care patients from Gaza

Brussels, Oct. 1, (dpa/GNA) – The European Union has coordinated the medical evacuation of eight patients from Gaza requiring urgent treatment, the European Commission announced on Tuesday.

The patients, who were accompanied by 24 family members, were brought to hospitals in Bucharest, a press release said.

It was the first time the EU has coordinated a medical evacuation from Gaza to its territory, the commission said.

So far, 45 severely ill Palestinian patients were brought to EU countries Spain, Belgium and Italy for treatment with the help of the World Health Organization (WHO).

According to the WHO, around 5,000 people have been evacuated for treatment since the current Gaza war started in October 2023, with over 80% receiving care in Egypt, Qatar and the United Arab Emirates.

A further 10,000 people in Gaza still need medical evacuation, the UN’s health agency said.
