Executive Chairman of LVSafrica Limited, Naa Dr. Alhassan Andani, has said it is about time Ghana moves from being an export-driven nation to one that produces sufficient goods.
This agenda, he said, could be achieved through boosting agricultural activities, as agriculture is the backbone of the economy.
Speaking on GhanaWeb TV’s The Lowdown programme, Dr. Andani said, “We should create more productive units rather than more consumption units. We have a lot more consumption units, whether it is our government that is just consuming or households that are just consuming.”
“What comes to us naturally is agriculture, which is not well organized… whatever we do is not at the optimal level, and that would have been the first engine to crank everything else,” he added.
It should be recalled that the Association of Ghana Industries (AGI) President, Dr. Humphrey Ayim-Darke, had questioned when the importation of basic essential commodities such as rice, poultry, toothpicks, tomatoes, sugar, bottled water, ceramic tiles, and other products will come to an end.
He said local manufacturers have the capacity to produce these items to meet at least half of the country’s demand.
Mr. Ayim-Darke stated that sugar was a basic product that could be produced on a large scale.
