Hassan Ayariga, the Presidential Candidate of the All People’s Congress (APC), has expressed frustration over the ongoing demands by political parties for a credible 2024 Provisional Voter Register.
He accused these parties of hypocrisy, highlighting their involvement in registering foreigners and minors, yet later calling for a credible register. According to Ayariga, such actions undermine the credibility of the system they are now questioning.
He further stressed the importance of having a reliable national data system to accurately capture citizens’ information, acknowledging the efforts made by the Electoral Commission and other authorities to improve data accuracy.
Ayariga noted that Ghana’s current data system is far behind that of other nations with more advanced systems. To resolve this, he proposed the adoption of the APC’s national data system, which he believes would offer a more comprehensive and accurate database of citizens.
“We have been running around talking about data collection, data systems, National Insurance Health, Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority, Ghana Card, and Electoral Commission. Other jurisdictions have a data system, that has every information from the child born today until the last old man standing.
He added, “We don’t have such data, and we must admit that we’re doing our best to give each other perfect data and that has challenges. We can’t say that we will not have challenges in anything we do, that is not entirely true. As much as we want perfect data, we should be thinking about the APC’s national data system, we have been proposing all, this while. That system has every information of everyone.
“What do we do here? Political parties bring in foreigners and minors to come and register. And you expect a 100% perfection of the voter register. How is that going to be possible? We’re the cause of where we are today. And we must all admit, we cannot be feeding the voter register and expecting it to be credible, the way we want it.”
