99-year-old World War II veteran Joseph Ashitey Hammond unveils memoir

Joseph Ashitey Hammond, a distinguished Ghanaian World War II veteran and former Warrant Officer Class One, has unveiled his autobiography, “Joseph Ashitey Hammond.”

Now 99 years old, Joseph Ashitey Hammond served in the Gold Coast Regiment and is the sole surviving witness to the historic February 28 Crossroad incident.

At the tender age of 16, he took up arms in World War II, marking the start of an incredible journey.

His memoir reflects on his decades of service to society, particularly his unvacillating allegiance to justice and principles.

The book launch which was held at the Kofi Annan International Training Centre in Teshie, on Saturday, September 21, 2024, was attended by dignitaries including the Teshie Mankralo, Nii Okang Duamro III, Vice Marshal Felix Asante, and the Hon. Ayikwe Otoo.

During the event, the Ghana Armed Forces honoured the World War II veteran with a citation in recognition of his exceptional service.

Popular Ghanaian musician Adotey Tetor provided entertainment for the attendees while ace broadcaster Kafui Dey took on the role of auctioneer.
