Police in the Ashanti Region arrested three people on Tuesday for allegedly disrupting the ongoing voter registration process at a centre in Tepa.
The police, in a statement, named the suspects as Abass Abukari, George Vinor, and Abdul Karim, who have since been placed in custody, assisting with investigations.
According to the statement, the three people engaged in a fight and temporarily caused disruption to the limited voter registration exercise being conducted by the Electoral Commission (EC).
The police said the incident happened at the Tepa EC Office in the Ashanti Region.
The statement indicated that law enforcement officers rushed to the scene to restore law and order at the registration centre.
“Calm has since been restored as the registration exercise continues,” the statement said in part.
According to eyewitnesses, the incident began when National Democratic Congress (NDC) men invaded the centre.
They claimed the NDC members initially accused the New Patriotic Party (NPP) of preventing some eligible Senior High School (SHS) students from leaving campus to register at home.
They further alleged that some NDC members insulted EC officers without provocation, accusing them of bias.
These verbal attacks apparently sparked a fight between NDC and NPP members, disrupting the exercise until the police intervened to restore order.
Smooth Registration
In a related development, the registration exercise was characterised by poor internet connectivity on the first day, which affected patronage.
Aside from internet connectivity problems, the exercise also did not start on time, a development which also accounted for low patronage at the various centres in the Ashanti Region.
Meanwhile, the registration exercise started on time and it was virtually smooth on the second day, as the machines worked to perfection this time around.
Former Kumasi Mayor, Kojo Bonsu, was spotted at some of the registration centres in the Ashanti Region on Wednesday, monitoring the exercise with an eagle eye.
DAILY GUIDE also gathered that the NPP gurus in the region also monitored the exercise by visiting various centres.
