We haven’t reaffirmed KB Mahama as our candidate- NPP Walewale Secretary

The New Patriotic Party’s (NPP) Walewale Constituency Secretary, Mr. Wuni Yidana, has debunked the purported decision announced by the constituency chairman that the constituency executives, patrons, council of elders and electoral area coordinators have reaffirmed the declaration of Dr Kabiru Tia Mahama as the party’s 2024 parliamentary candidate.

“I wish to state in no uncertain terms that no decision was ever reached at the said meeting in which the stakeholders purportedly reaffirmed the declaration of Dr Kabiru Mahama as our party’s candidate of our constituency” the Secretary vehemently denied in a statement.

The constituency chairman, Mohammed Janda Muniru, in a statement issued on Thursday, May 2, 2024, said after an extensive meeting with constituency executives, patrons, council of elders and electoral area coordinators, the stakeholders endorsed the declaration of Dr Kabiru Mahama as the parliamentary candidate for the Walewale constituency by the electoral commission on January 27, 2024.

He said the house also tasked the patrons and council of elders to engage the incumbent Member of Parliament, Hajia Lariba Zuwera Abudu, in what he describes as meaningful discussions to prioritize the party’s interests and resolve the electoral dispute.

But, the constituency secretary in his response called on the general public particularly NPP supporters to disregard the letter of the chairman and treat it with the contempt it deserves.

According to him, the conduct of the constituency chairman is contemptuous as the parliamentary election is a subject of litigation still pending before the Tamale High Court.

He added that the act of the chairman will seriously militate against the amicable settlement of the matter.

Meanwhile, the court in March granted a request of the NPP to settle the impasse out of court and report back on the terms of resolution.

The presiding Judge, Justice Richard Kogyapwap granted the request after the NPP Director of Elections, Evans Nimako appeared in court.

Given this, the Walewale constituency secretary has appealed to the leadership of the party to take the opportunity given by the court to resolve the melee to ensure they win the 2024 general elections.
