Multiple sequels were nominated for Best Picture at the Oscars last year, marking the first time that has ever happened.
Only nine sequels have ever received a Best Picture nomination and two of them have actually won the award.
Before the double nominations for sequels in 2023, the last time a sequel was nominated was in 2016. No sequels were nominated in 2024.

The Bells of St. Mary’s was nominated for Best Picture and it was the sequel to 1944′s Going My Way, which won Best Picture.
The Godfather Part II (1974) – WON
The Godfather Part II won the Oscar for Best Picture at the 47th Academy Awards in 1975. The movie is a sequel to The Godfather, which also won Best Picture.
The Godfather Part III (1990) – NOMINATED
The Godfather Part III received a Best Picture nomination at the 63rd Academy Awards in 1991, but it didn’t win.
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers (2002) – NOMINATED
The Lord of the Rings: The Two Towers received a Best Picture nomination at the 75th Academy Awards in 2003. The first movie, The Fellowship of the Ring, was nominated one year earlier.
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King (2003) – WON
The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King swept the Oscars and won Best Picture and many other awards at the 76th Academy Awards in 2004.
Toy Story 3 (2010) – NOMINATED
Toy Story 3 received a Best Picture nomination at the 83rd Academy Awards in 2011. While it didn’t win the award, it did get Best Animated Feature.
Mad Max: Fury Road (2015) – NOMINATED
Mad Max: Fury Road is a sequel to the movies from the 1970s and 1980s. It was nominated for Best Picture at the 88th Academy Awards in 2016.
Avatar: The Way of Water (2023) – NOMINATED
Avatar: The Way of Water was nominated for four awards, including Best Picture, and won for Best Visual Effects.
Top Gun: Maverick (2023) – NOMINATED
Top Gun: Maverick was nominated for six awards, including Best Picture, and won for Best Sound.
