5 popular public officials suspected of using ‘Yomo’ Dye –

The subject of old people dying their hair black to hide their greys hair is a new phenomenon in Ghana politics.

Many Ghanaian old politicians have been accused of using hair dye to hide their grey hair but it is not clear whether the men in this list dyed their hair or not.

The onset of hair greying in humans varies from person to person, as well as among racial groups of people based on genetic and other germane factors, health researchers say.

It has been established empirically that white people start to grey in their mid-or late 30s whereas African Americans begin to grey in their mid-40s. Averagely, however, most people grow grey hair in their late 30s or mid-40s.

Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah

Recently, the Commissioner of the Ghana Revenue Authority (GRA), Rev. Dr. Ammishaddai Owusu-Amoah, appeared before the Public Accounts Committee with all black hair refusing to admit his age.

The over-62-year-old later admitted publicly that he is long past retirement age of 60 years. He acknowledged, further, that he has been working without a contract for two years and is into his third post-retirement year without a contract.

The revelation came to light during the Public Accounts Committee sitting on Monday, January 29, 2024, when concerns about his retirement were raised by the Minority in Parliament.

81 years Without Grey Hair

Leading opposition figure and founder of Defunct Unibank Dr. Kwabena Duffour last year celebrated 80 years on earth looking younger and healthy without any signs of grey in hair. He is 81 this year.

Many social media users wondered how the politician and retired banker managed to avoid growing grey hair which is usually associated with old age.

Akoto Afriyie hair dye

Former Agric Minister Dr. Owusu Afriyie Akoto has been known to have been dying his hair since his much younger university days to increase his “appeal” and self-confidence.

Now as an old man with grey hair, the habit is yet to die as he keeps spotting dark hair despite his advanced age.

Social media rumors claim Dr. Akoto carefully ensures every single grey hair of his is dyed before posing for photographs.

In 2017, the NDC’s Madam Valerie Sawyerr used Dr. Akoto’s hair dye to tease him about the alleged bumper harvest in Ghana.

“He (Akoto) should keep on lying till he wakes up one day to find the worms crawling in his hair … but I guess the dye is strong enough to kill them …”

Hassan Ayariga hair dye

Founder of the All People’s Party, Dr. Hassan Ayariga was in the news in 2022 for his new appearance hairstyle which sparked various reactions on social media.

Ayariga was spotted on GHOne TV where he was invited to discuss issues of national interest spotting black permed shining hair. Ayariga was spotted with thick-looking black dyed hair which appears to have been laid with lots of gel.

Kwesi Ahwoi

In 2018, ex-President Rawlings had cause to complain about Ahwoi dying his hair to appear younger for Mahama to choose him as running mate in 2020.

The late former President rejected Kwesi Ahwoi, one of the Ahwoi brothers over his hair dye “tricks”.

Mr. Rawlings in 2018 took to Twitter to express his opposition to the Ahwoi brother becoming the running mate to Mahama.

“Isn’t the Presidency too busy a place for hopefuls/running mates who spend a little too much time grooming their moustache and dyeing their hair?” Rawlings tweeted in reference to Kwesi Ahwoi as MyNewsGh.com reported then.
