The Wenchi Traditional Council in the Bono region has issued a seven-day ultimatum to herdsmen in its jurisdiction, demanding the immediate removal of their cattle.
In collaboration with local chiefs, the Municipal Assembly, Police Service, and other relevant authorities, the Council is actively enforcing this ultimatum following directives from the Paramount Chief of the Wenchi Traditional Area.
This decision comes in response to concerns from both crop farmers and residents concerning the rampant destruction of farmlands by cattle belonging to these herdsmen.
In an interview with Citi News, Nana Anye Amoanpong Tabrako III, the Paramount Chief of the Wenchi Traditional Area said he will not allow the herdsmen to destroy the livelihoods of his people.
“This is an unacceptable practice during my tenure. The continuous destruction of crops and farmlands is detrimental to our community. Wenchi thrives on agriculture, particularly cashew farming, which is significantly impacted by these cattle. We cannot afford to lose our livelihoods,” he expressed.
“We are actively engaging with the Municipal Assembly, Police Service, traditional authorities, and relevant stakeholders to devise effective measures. Farmers are also being consulted to ensure that solutions are comprehensive and inclusive, safeguarding our community from further harm,” Nana Tabrako III affirmed.
