Unexpectedly, Ghana’s opening game for the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) campaign did not proceed as expected. Regretfully, they lost against Cape Verde 2-1 at the Ivory Coast’s Stade Félix Houphouët-Boigny.
The Black Stars struggled right away, falling behind in the 17th minute as the Blue Sharks took an early lead thanks to a rebound by Jamiro Monteiro. Ghana equalised by a powerful header from Alexander Djiku, despite their best attempts to retake the lead. Ghana was left stunned as Cape Verde scored a last minute goal, shattering their hopes of getting a draw and earning a point.
