In a heartfelt and impassioned message, Zimbabwean journalist Hopewell Chin’ono has called upon South African youth to exercise their right to vote in the upcoming 2024 elections. Through a Twitter post today, Saturday, September 09, 2023, Chin’ono emphasized the profound impact that voting can have on the future of the country.

“Dear South African youth, please register to vote and make sure that you actually vote in 2024. Your future is inextricably linked to the choices that people will make on voting day in 2024,” Chin’ono implored, underlining the significance of active participation in the democratic process.

Chin’ono’s message resonates with the South African youth, reminding them that their decisions at the ballot box will shape the nation’s trajectory for the next five years, spanning from 2024 to 2029. The call to action carries a poignant reminder that abstaining from voting allows others to determine the nation’s direction, possibly with divergent priorities and perspectives.

The Zimbabwean journalist emphasized the critical deadline for voter registration or updating existing voter information, which falls before the proclamation day preceding the election. This date serves as a crucial reminder for young South Africans to ensure their eligibility and participation in the democratic process.

Chin’ono further urged the youth not to let their future be decided by individuals whose needs and aspirations may differ from their own. He highlighted the interconnectedness of Southern African nations and the importance of a thriving South Africa for the stability and prosperity of the entire region.

“Every person in Southern Africa cares about South Africa because if it fails, the whole region will collapse, we don’t want that,” Chin’ono stated. He pointed to the unfortunate examples of struggling economies in the region, such as Zimbabwe and Malawi, underscoring the dire consequences of economic failure.

Chin’ono’s impassioned plea serves as a call to action for South African youth to take charge of their future, participate in the electoral process, and ensure that their voices are heard. As the 2024 elections draw near, his words resonate as a reminder that democracy thrives when citizens actively engage in shaping their nation’s destiny through the ballot box.
