It\u2019s called myelogenous (my-uh-LOHJ-uh-nus) leukemia because it affects a group of white blood cells called the myeloid cells, which normally develop into the various types of mature blood cells, such as red blood cells, white blood cells and platelets.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Risk factors<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>According to Mayoclinic, factors that may increase your risk of acute myelogenous leukemia (AML) include:<\/p>\n<p>1. Increasing age.\u00a0The risk of acute myelogenous leukemia increases with age. Acute myelogenous leukemia is most common in adults age 65 and older.<\/p>\n<p>2. Your sex<strong>.<\/strong>\u00a0Men are more likely to develop acute myelogenous leukemia than are women.<\/p>\n<p>3. Previous cancer treatment.\u00a0People who\u2019ve had certain types of chemotherapy and radiation therapy may have a greater risk of developing\u00a0AML.<\/p>\n<p>4. Exposure to radiation.\u00a0People exposed to very high levels of radiation, such as survivors of a nuclear reactor accident, have an increased risk of developing\u00a0AML.<\/p>\n<p>5. Dangerous chemical exposure.\u00a0Exposure to certain chemicals, such as benzene, is linked to a greater risk of\u00a0AML.<\/p>\n<p>7. Smoking.\u00a0AML\u00a0is linked to cigarette smoke, which contains benzene and other known cancer-causing chemicals.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/ng\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/09\/f209ad27a3bb4babb0cbe97d5fd6f278\"\/><\/p>\n<p>8. Other blood disorders.\u00a0People who\u2019ve had another blood disorder, such as myelodysplasia, myelofibrosis, polycythemia vera or thrombocythemia, are at greater risk of developing\u00a0AML.<\/p>\n<p>9.
