School in Welkom Faces Allegations of Racism

A school in Welkom, South Africa, is facing allegations of racism after footage emerged of a teacher just watching while a boy is being strangled. The incident took place on Monday, March 7, 2023, at the Welkom High School.

The footage shows a group of boys surrounding another boy, who is black. One of the boys is strangling the victim, while the others are laughing and cheering. The teacher, who is white, is standing nearby and does nothing to intervene.

The footage has been widely shared on social media, and has sparked outrage among many South Africans. The Department of Education has condemned the incident, and has called for the teacher to be suspended.

The school’s principal, Mr. John Smith, has also condemned the incident. He has said that the teacher will be suspended pending an investigation.

The victim’s family has said that they are considering legal action against the school and the teacher. They say that the incident has caused their son emotional trauma.

The allegations of racism have also raised concerns about the level of racism in South African schools. A recent study by the South African Human Rights Commission found that racism is still a major problem in South African schools. The study found that black students are more likely to be victims of racism than white students.

The allegations of racism at the Welkom High School are a reminder of the challenges that South Africa still faces in overcoming its racist past. The incident has also highlighted the need for schools to do more to address racism and discrimination.

In addition to the suspension of the teacher, the school should also take steps to address the underlying racism that allowed this incident to happen. This could include providing anti-racism training for teachers and staff, and creating a more inclusive environment for all students.

The Welkom High School incident is a reminder that racism is still a problem in South Africa. It is important to speak out against racism and discrimination, and to hold those who commit these acts accountable.
