In the wake of a tragic fire in Johannesburg that claimed the lives of at least 73 people, Minister in the Presidency Khumbudzo Ntshavheni made a statement that has sparked a nationwide debate. The incident, which occurred in the early hours of Thursday morning, has brought into focus the complex issue of housing for undocumented immigrants living in hijacked buildings in South Africa.

Ntshavheni’s assertion that providing housing for illegal immigrants in such buildings is not the duty of the South African government has elicited strong reactions from various quarters. It is a statement that encapsulates the broader discussion surrounding immigration, housing, and the government’s responsibilities.

The tragic fire in Johannesburg, which unfolded in the heart of the city, serves as a grim reminder of the dire living conditions faced by many undocumented immigrants in South Africa. These individuals often find themselves in precarious situations, forced to reside in buildings that have been illegally occupied by squatters. Overcrowding, inadequate safety measures, and substandard living conditions are not uncommon in such dwellings.

Minister Ntshavheni’s response to the tragedy has ignited a debate about the government’s role in addressing the housing crisis faced by undocumented immigrants living in hijacked buildings. Her statement emphasizes that there is no housing crisis in South Africa, a claim that is disputed by numerous activists and organizations working with vulnerable populations.

During a post-cabinet briefing in Pretoria, Minister Ntshavheni faced questions regarding whether the government had a national strategy to address the issue of stolen buildings in the country’s metropolitan areas. Stolen or hijacked buildings have become a significant concern, not only due to the potential safety hazards they pose but also because they often house vulnerable communities.

Advocates argue that the government has a duty to protect all residents within its borders, regardless of their immigration status. They contend that failing to provide housing solutions for undocumented immigrants leaves them in precarious and unsafe conditions, making them susceptible to tragedies like the one in Johannesburg.

Critics of Ntshavheni’s claim point to the visible and documented housing crisis affecting many South Africans, citizens and legal residents. They argue that tackling the broader housing crisis should be a priority for the government, irrespective of immigration status.
