As the excitement builds for the upcoming Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in 2023, Nigerian football fans are already buzzing with anticipation, hopeful that their national team, the Super Eagles, will emerge victorious in the Ivory Coast. With more than six months remaining until the tournament kicks off, Nigeria’s recent 1-0 triumph over Guinea-Bissau has bolstered their hopes of qualification and ignited discussions about the potential squad members.

The Super Eagles, three-time champions of the tournament, face intense competition this time around. The question on everyone’s mind is: which players stand the best chance of representing Nigeria at AFCON 2023? Let’s delve into the players who coach Jose Peseiro should seriously consider in his final squad.

1. Odion Ighalo

Ighalo’s story has seen ups and downs, with moments of retirement and return to the pitch. While he may have been written off before, the seasoned striker still possesses the potential to contribute significantly to Nigeria’s Nations Cup campaign.

2. Folarin Balogun

Emerging as a standout performer during his loan spell at Stade de Reims in Ligue 1, Balogun’s impressive 17 goals this season are nothing short of remarkable. Despite Nigeria’s already strong attacking lineup, Balogun’s skills are undeniable, making him a valuable addition to the Super Eagles.

3. Chuba Akpom

Once an Arsenal player, Akpom’s resurgence at Middlesbrough has been nothing short of remarkable, with 25 goals in the Championship. While he’s yet to earn a national team call-up, his consistent performance demands consideration from the Super Eagles.

4. Victor Boniface

With successful spells in Norway and Belgium, Boniface’s prowess in front of the goal is evident. Having demonstrated his talent at the U-20 level, he seems poised to make his mark in the senior national team, potentially displacing struggling players.

5. Daniel Akpeyi

Despite an inconsistent international career, Akpeyi’s experience stands out. While he faced some challenges, his time with Swallows FC and a potential improvement in form could warrant his return to the limelight.

6. Peter Olayinka

Olayinka’s goal-scoring record in the Czech top flight cannot be ignored, even in the face of fierce competition. While he might find it tough to secure a spot in the attacking lineup, his prowess is still a valuable asset.

7. Cyriel Dessers

Though Dessers has struggled to maintain consistency at the club level, his five Serie A goals this season showcase his potential. The competition for spots in Nigeria’s attacking roster is intense, but Dessers’ ability to find the net could make him a contender.

8. Taiwo Awoniyi

Amidst the fierce competition among Nigeria’s strikers, Awoniyi’s return to fitness at Nottingham Forest places him in the pecking order. While he might not be at the forefront, his presence adds depth to the team.

As the AFCON 2023 approaches, the Super Eagles’ head coach, Jose Peseiro, faces the challenging task of finalizing his squad. With a mix of experienced players and emerging talents, Nigeria has a pool of options to choose from. Balancing the selection will be crucial in the team’s quest for success in the tournament. As fans eagerly await the final list, the spotlight is on these potential squad members to prove their worth on the grand stage of African football.
