Sony Interactive Entertainment (basically the PlayStation wing) today announced plans to acquire Audeze, the company has confirmed with . The Orange Country, California-based firm is best known for its high-end headphones, targeted at gamers and audio producers. The hardware is often priced into four-figures, but the company earns consistently high marks from reviewers and users alike.<\/p>\n
In a release announcing the news, the companies are quick to note that operating under the Sony banner won\u2019t mean platform exclusivity (at least not at first). Audeze will continue to produce gaming headphones for competitors, including \u2014 presumably \u2014 the Xbox. PlayStation-branded products, however, are almost certain to follow.<\/p>\n
\u201cAudeze is a premier brand for headphones, and this acquisition highlights Sony Interactive\u2019s focus on innovation and providing the best audio experience to PlayStation players,\u201d says SIE SVP Hideaki Nishino. \u201cWe\u2019re excited to bring Audeze\u2019s expertise into the PlayStation ecosystem, building on the great strides we\u2019ve made with PlayStation 5\u2019s Tempest 3D AudioTech and the Pulse 3D wireless headset.\u201d<\/p>\n
Audeze, meanwhile, says the deal will offer the company a wider reach. It\u2019s a hard fact to argue, given Sony\u2019s massive footprint. \u201cSony Interactive provides Audeze with a unique opportunity to scale our business, as we continue with our mission to deliver best-in-class headphones to recording professionals, audiophiles and gamers,\u201d says CEO Sankar Thiagasamudram. \u201cWe\u2019re also looking forward to contributing to Sony Interactive\u2019s efforts to take PlayStation audio experiences to the next level.\u201d<\/p>\n
In addition to its gaming lines, Audeze also produces a speakerphone and reference headphones and in-ear monitors for music production. Sony, meanwhile, is readying the release of Portal, a $200 portable PS5 streaming handheld.<\/p>\n
