Refereeing decisions in football have always been a topic of intense discussion and debate. Whether it’s a crucial match or a seemingly minor incident, referees often find themselves under scrutiny for their judgments. The recent incident involving Mhango’s push on the goalkeeper in the Sekhukhune vs. Swallows game has raised questions about the reasons behind referee mistakes and the importance of effective communication among officials. In this article, we delve into the insights shared by SAFA Head of Referees Abdul Ebrahim regarding VAR coming to SA.

Abdul Ebrahim emphasizes the significance of positioning in making accurate calls. He highlights that a slight change in angle can alter the perspective of an incident significantly. Regarding the Mhango incident, Ebrahim suggests that if the referee had taken a step or two to the left or right, he might have seen the play differently. This insight underscores the importance of being in the right position to ensure better visibility of the action on the field.

Ebrahim points out that had there been effective communication between the referees, a different decision might have been reached. This brings attention to the necessity of clear and timely communication among the officials to prevent misinterpretations and controversies.

Ebrahim’s perspective offers a balanced approach to handling referee mistakes. He acknowledges that errors are part of the game but doesn’t advocate referees starting from scratch. Instead, he suggests reinforcing the concepts covered in referees’ workshops. This approach aligns with the idea that learning from mistakes and continuous improvement can lead to enhanced officiating.

Ebrahim urges the importance of understanding referees’ challenges and the factors affecting their performance. He draws attention to the case of Abongile and Luxolo, who benefited from rehabilitation and emerged stronger. Similarly, he suggests connecting with referees to identify any hurdles that might hinder their excellence. This approach humanizes referees and emphasizes the need for support.

Abdul Ebrahim sheds light on the Referees Committee’s eagerness to introduce VAR (Video Assistant Referee) technology in South Africa. He reveals that SAFA has communicated its intention to FIFA, awaiting the appointment of a project lead for VAR implementation. While the training for VAR can commence, logistical considerations and cost coverage remain challenges to be addressed.

“I can tell you 9/10 it has to do with being in the correct position. In that incident had the ref taken a step or two to his left/right then he may have seen something different (Sekhukhune v Swallows)” – Abdul Ebrahim on #SportsNightAmplifited #SNAWA #TheWeekendThatWas

“VAR training can commence immediately but it’s the equipment and structures that need to be worked out. As to how the costs would be covered, that is above my level probably 3 levels above me” – Abdul Ebrahim on #SportsNightAmplified #SNAWA #TheWeekendThatWas
