China is making great efforts to\u00a0promote\u00a0the in-depth integration of information technology\u00a0(IT)\u00a0into\u00a0its\u00a0transportation sector.\u00a0With new products and new business models continuously emerging across the country, people across China are benefiting from improved travel experiences in various scenarios \u2013 from city streets to intercity expressways.\u00a0<\/p>\n

This summer, many people in China have found that\u00a0map apps can display shaded \u201csun protection\u201d routes for pedestrians in real-time\u00a0and automatically recommend a shady route based on user\u2019s destination.<\/p>\n

\u201cBy leveraging remote sensing technology, our app can intelligently identify the distribution density of trees around roads, and calculate the dynamic light and shadow condition of road sections based on relevant factors of specific locations,\u201d said an executive of leading Chinese mapping service provider\u00a0Amap.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\n

Thanks to the application of intelligent mobile terminal technologies, urban transportation services in China have witnessed significant improvement in quality and efficiency.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are peaks and valleys in urban travel demand. The waiting time for taxis spike during rush hour,\u201d said Li Xinhua, general manager of the taxi division of Amap\u2019s ride hailing services.<\/p>\n

In an effort to improve\u00a0the\u00a0supply-demand matching\u00a0efficiency,\u00a0Amap\u00a0has\u00a0leveraged\u00a0big data to predict congestion and adjust pricing\u00a0in real time, according to Li.<\/p>\n

IT is penetrating every corner of urban transportation in China, continuously meeting people\u2019s diverse and individualized travel needs.<\/p>\n

Data released by China\u2019s\u00a0Ministry of Transport\u00a0(MOT) showed that\u00a0over 300\u00a0Chinese cities\u00a0have ride-hailing services, with over 25 million daily orders;\u00a0and\u00a0that a total of\u00a015 million shared bikes\u00a0have been deployed nationwide, generating over 28 million orders\u00a0on a\u00a0daily\u00a0basis.<\/p>\n

\u201cRapid economic development has stimulated\u00a0more\u00a0demand for transportation,\u00a0while\u00a0challenges like congestion, accidents and pollution have\u00a0become increasingly prominent,\u201d\u00a0an\u00a0official of\u00a0the\u00a0science and technology department of the MOT\u00a0pointed out.\u00a0<\/p>\n

IT, represented by artificial intelligence (AI),\u00a0can provide new approaches to enhancing\u00a0the service capabilities of transportation\u00a0infrastructure,\u00a0the\u00a0official\u00a0noted.\u00a0<\/p>\n

By building and transforming intelligent facilities, which enable\u00a0dynamic adjustment\u00a0of signals\u00a0based on real-time vehicle flows, at 332 intersections,\u00a0Beijing Economic-Technological Development Area, also known as E-Town,\u00a0in\u00a0China\u2019s capital city\u00a0Beijing, has\u00a0achieved remarkable results in addressing traffic congestion.\u00a0<\/p>\n

The intelligent facilities\u00a0have reduced\u00a0queue length\u00a0by\u00a030.3\u00a0percent\u00a0and\u00a0unnecessary time of\u00a0green lights by\u00a018.33\u00a0percent\u00a0in\u00a0relevant\u00a0areas.<\/p>\n

Xiangyang Hi-Tech Industrial Development Zone\u00a0in Xiangyang city, central China\u2019s Hubei province, has seen autonomous driving services expanding\u00a0to over 140 application scenarios of the Internet of Vehicles (IoV), 234 intersections, 510 kilometers of two-way roads, and an environment for large-scale city-level application covering an area of 150 square kilometers, according to an executive of a project of the Central and Southern China Municipal Engineering Design and Research Institute Co., Ltd.<\/p>\n

On local roads for testing\u00a0intelligent\u00a0connected\u00a0vehicles\u00a0(ICVs),\u00a0autonomous shuttle\u00a0minibuses provide scheduled pickups\u00a0for passengers, while\u00a0self-driving\u00a0sanitation vehicles\u00a0carry out automated sweeping tasks.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Chengdu city, capital of southwest China\u2019s Sichuan province, has adopted a \u201ctransportation brain\u201d\u00a0powered by\u00a0Chinese IT firm\u00a0Inspur\u2019s storage products and services. Boasting a strong capacity to identify more than 100 million pictures for traffic violations daily\u00a0and\u00a0meet\u00a0other needs\u00a0for traffic management,\u00a0the \u201ctransportation brain\u201d has helped the city increase its\u00a0vehicle management efficiency\u00a0by\u00a0nearly fivefold and\u00a0the efficiency of\u00a0traffic flow by around 15\u00a0percent.<\/p>\n

Leveraging\u00a0its\u00a0extensive road network,\u00a0China has ramped up efforts to further promote the application of\u00a0AI technology\u00a0in transportation systems, striving to accelerate the development of expressways by expanding the application scenarios of AI technology beyond urban areas to intercity routes.\u00a0<\/p>\n

On the Chengdu-Yibin Expressway connecting\u00a0the cities of Chengdu and Yibin in Sichuan province,\u00a0there is a pole\u00a0every 800 meters along the divider. The pole is loaded with various devices, traditional devices like camera and modern devices millimeter-wave radar. These devices can help\u00a0achieve\u00a0accurate\u00a0real-time monitoring of road conditions\u00a024 hours a day.\u00a0<\/p>\n

\u201cBy utilizing new-generation IT like AI, we can not only intelligently analyze exceptions like speeding,\u00a0contraflow driving\u00a0and emergency parking, but also enable vehicles on\u00a0expressways to obtain beyond line-of-sight information in a timely manner,\u201d said Chen Ken,\u00a0chairman of Sichuan Digital\u00a0Transportation Tech Co., Ltd.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to Chen, since\u00a0the installation of these devices,\u00a073.8 percent of the accidents that have taken place on the expressway have been proactively discovered by relevant personnel based on alerts sent by\u00a0an\u00a0AI-empowered system, and\u00a0the\u00a0average response time\u00a0has been shortened by\u00a0nearly 34\u00a0percent.<\/p>\n

The\u00a0Taihu\u00a0tunnel on the Suzhou-Wuxi-Changzhou\u00a0expressway,\u00a0which is 10.79 kilometers in length, is equipped with\u00a0an intelligent lighting system that automatically adjusts brightness\u00a0according to\u00a0environmental changes.\u00a0The bright yet gentle lighting from the ceiling\u00a0of the tunnel\u00a0creates a relaxed atmosphere,\u00a0easing driver tension and fatigue from\u00a0driving for\u00a0long periods\u00a0of time\u00a0in an\u00a0enclosed\u00a0space.\u00a0<\/p>\n

Moreover, full coverage\u00a0of 5G network and\u00a0the\u00a0BeiDou\u00a0Navigation\u00a0Satellite System (BDS) services enable passengers and drivers to enjoy\u00a0uninterrupted\u00a0and\u00a0high-quality\u00a0Internet access and travel guidance.<\/p>\n

As a key direction for high-quality development of the transportation sector,\u00a0smart\u00a0transportation promises broad prospects.\u00a0<\/p>\n

According to an official\u00a0of\u00a0the\u00a0science and technology department of the MOT,\u00a0smart transportation will\u00a0show\u00a0three key features:\u00a0extensive application of\u00a0intelligent\u00a0and\u00a0automated vehicles, which\u00a0will significantly reduce the incidence of\u00a0human error-induced accidents; infrastructure\u00a0that is more resilient, which will\u00a0enable\u00a0safe travel anytime; and\u00a0highly efficient transportation\u00a0management\u00a0based on\u00a0systems\u00a0with exponentially improved network capacity.<\/p>\n
