<\/div>\nArsenal manager Mikel Arteta says there are \u201cno number ones\u201d in his squad after signing goalkeeper David Raya.<\/p>\n
The 27-year-old has signed from Brentford on a season-long loan which could be made permanent.<\/p>\n
Arteta is hoping to increase competition in his goal with Raya challenging England keeper Aaron Ramsdale.<\/p>\n

\u201cTo be better [as a team], the environment has to be better,\u201d Arteta said.<\/p>\n
Ramsdale, 25, kept 14 clean sheets last season as Arsenal finished runners-up to Manchester City. Still, Arteta said he hoped Raya\u2019s arrival and greater competition for places in his squad will lift his players to improve their level of performance.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhen you have to be at 100% every day, believe me, your level increases,\u201d the former Everton and Real Sociedad midfielder said.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe have two great goalkeepers, just like we have two great left-wingers, two great holding midfielders, two great strikers. There is no number one \u2013 not in any position.\u201d<\/p>\n
Defender\u00a0Jurrien Timber requires surgery on his injured ACL\u00a0he sustained in the opening-day win over Nottingham Forest on Saturday.<\/p>\n
\u201cWhat happened to Jurrien can happen to anyone. If Aaron [Ramsdale] did his cruciate, we have to be prepared and proactive. Now, we have two excellent goalkeepers who exactly fit our model.\u201d<\/p>\n
Former Manchester United goalkeeper Peter Schmeichel\u00a0doubts the benefit of competition between the sticks\u00a0and told BBC Radio 5 Live: \u201cRamsdale was fantastic for Arsenal last season; he\u2019s brilliant with his feet and he\u2019s brilliant with the core business of goalkeeping. He is the best English keeper.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cThe goalkeeper\u2019s position is very reactive. You cannot create anything on your own; you have to wait for things to happen. You\u2019re now asking your goalkeeper to prove he\u2019s better than the other one, that means you now have to go out and do stuff \u2013 and you don\u2019t want that.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s the one position that you want to be steady. The worst thing is when a goalkeeper tries to do something and it goes wrong. Every time, it\u2019s a goal.<\/p>\n
\u201cI don\u2019t understand why Arteta would create this potential problem.\u201d<\/p>\n
