In a recent development that highlights internal divisions within South Africa’s ruling party, President Cyril Ramaphosa’s senior Cabinet members, Pravin Gordhan and Gwede Mantashe, have registered their complaints with the president regarding public criticisms made by Fikile Mbalula, the secretary-general of the African National Congress (ANC). The two ministers expressed their displeasure over Mbalula’s comments that targeted them directly.

The tensions came to light when Mbalula, a prominent figure within the ANC and a close ally of Ramaphosa, took aim at Gordhan and Mantashe during a public address. His criticisms were centered around their handling of key policy matters and their performance as ministers in the government.

Pravin Gordhan, the Minister of Public Enterprises, and Gwede Mantashe, the Minister of Mineral Resources and Energy, reportedly found Mbalula’s remarks to be not only baseless but damaging to their reputations and the unity of the party. Both Gordhan and Mantashe have been long-standing ANC members and have been actively involved in shaping the party’s policies and direction.

Sources close to the matter reveal that the president has taken the complaints seriously and is mediating the situation to address the internal discord. The ANC has a history of presenting a united front to the public, and public disagreements among senior party members can undermine its image of coherence and strength.

Observers note that this incident highlights ongoing tensions within the ANC, particularly as the party faces challenges on multiple fronts, governance issues, economic struggles, and public trust. Ramaphosa’s efforts to unite the party and lead South Africa through these challenges have occasionally been complicated by internal disagreements and factionalism.

As the situation unfolds, many are watching closely to see how President Ramaphosa manages the tensions within his party. The outcome of this incident could have broader implications for both the ANC’s internal dynamics and the country’s political landscape as a whole.
