The City of Cape Town has defied a directive from Transport Minister Sindisiwe Chikunga to release impounded taxis. The city says that the taxis will not be released until the required fees are paid by the taxi drivers. Minister Chikunga had ordered the city to release the taxis on the grounds that they had been impounded in violation of what she believed to be illegal ordinances. However, the city says that the taxis were impounded for legitimate reasons, such as operating without a license or being in a dangerous condition.

The standoff between the city and the transport minister is the latest in a long-running dispute between the taxi industry and the government. Taxi drivers have been protesting against the impoundment of taxis, as well as other regulations that they say are unfair.

The DA, which controls the City of Cape Town, has taken a tough stance on the taxi industry. Mayor Geordin Hill-Lewis has said that the city will not be intimidated by the taxi drivers and will continue to enforce the law.

The ANC, which controls the national government, has been more sympathetic to the taxi industry. Minister Chikunga has said that she understands the taxi drivers’ concerns and is working to find a solution that is fair to everyone.

However, the standoff between the city and the transport minister is likely to continue. The taxi industry is a powerful force in South Africa and is not easily cowed. The government will need to find a way to resolve the dispute without alienating the taxi drivers, who provide an essential service to millions of South Africans.
