Chelsea’s new American owner, Todd Boehly has successfully exploited the current UEFA’s FFP rules with his latest signings and has forced the European governing body to change the rules before other clubs start copying what he’s doing.

In an exclusive report by Martyn Ziegler, the Chief Sports reporter of the Times, Chelsea’s long term contracts to their new signings have made UEFA to set a five-year FFP limit from next summer.

Recall that Chelsea have been offering their new signings long term contracts of around 7-8 years, spreading the signing fees of these players over the whole length of the contract, thereby exploiting UEFA rules as regards FFP.

For example, Chelsea are paying €70m for Mudryk excluding add-ons, that means the deal will cost them approximately €10m per year in FFP book over the 7 and a half years of his contract.

Now UEFA are planning to change the current rule which does not cap the number of years by which clubs can give new players to set a five-year maximum for the length of time over which a player’s transfer fee can be spread from next summer.

Todd Boehly really deserves some credit for coming into football and finding a loophole in the FFP rules that worked so well before. He was able to sign a brand new squad without breaching the rules and has now forced UEFA to close this loophole meaning other clubs outside of Chelsea are unable to take advantage of it.
