Measuring 2 kilometers square in each direction at its base, a design reminiscent of Egyptian pyramids, the geological structure instantly became the inspiration to all sorts of online conspiracy theories. Some claimed that it had been built by an ancient civilization 10,000 years ago when Antarctica was warm, while others said that it was the work of aliens. But while it\u2019s true that a naturally-occurring pyramid of that size seems unlikely, geologists would tell you that this is actually just that, a mountain that happens to look like a pyramid.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPyramid shapes are not impossible \u2014 many peaks partially look like pyramids, but they only have one to two faces like that, rarely four,\u201d Irvine geology professor Eric Rignot told LiveScience. \u201cThis is just a mountain that looks like a pyramid.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The geologist went on to explain that pyramids are actually a common feature of glaciated areas known as a \u2018pyramidal peaked mountain\u2019, and that they are so-shaped\u00a0by the convergence of glaciers on the sides of an existing landmass.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" loading=\"lazy\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-79225 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/gp\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/07\/pyramid-antarctica2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"750\" height=\"438\"\/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not a complicated shape, so it\u2019s not a special coincidence either,\u201d Dr Mitch Darcy, a geologist at the German Research Centre for Geosciences in Potsdam, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.iflscience.com\/the-truth-about-the-mysterious-pyramid-discovered-in-antarctica-39167\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"nofollow noopener\">recently confirmed<\/a>. \u201cBy definition, it is a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.britannica.com\/science\/nunatak\"><em>nunatak<\/em><\/a>, which is simply a peak of rock sticking out above a glacier or an ice sheet. This one has the shape of a pyramid, but that doesn\u2019t make it a human construction.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Good luck using science to debunk <a href=\"https:\/\/www.odditycentral.com\/news\/the-conspiracy-theorists-who-believe-nazis-vikings-and-the-lost-tribes-of-israel-all-live-inside-our-hollow-earth.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">online conspiracy theories<\/a>, though! A story involving the \u2018mysterious\u201d pyramid of the South Pole went viral recently, using the same images that originally drew attention seven years ago.
