{"id":85801,"date":"2023-07-22T00:08:11","date_gmt":"2023-07-22T00:08:11","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/07\/22\/long-convoys-governors-need-to-knock-off-waste-soludo\/"},"modified":"2023-07-22T00:08:11","modified_gmt":"2023-07-22T00:08:11","slug":"long-convoys-governors-need-to-knock-off-waste-soludo","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/07\/22\/long-convoys-governors-need-to-knock-off-waste-soludo\/","title":{"rendered":"Long Convoys: Governors Need To Knock Off Waste \u2013 Soludo"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div id=\"\">\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(37, 37, 37);\">Governor Charles Soludo of Anambra State says the issue of long convoys by governors was discussed at the last National Executive Council (NEC) meeting.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"color: rgb(37, 37, 37);\">The meeting, which held at the Presidential Villa in Abuja on Thursday, was chaired by Vice-President Kashim Shettima.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>After the discussion, the governor spoke to State House reporters and claimed that the meeting had also prompted officials to reduce the cost of running their respective departments.<\/p>\n<p>Someone used the example of a state governor travelling in a convoy of 20 or more vehicles, all of which need to be refuelled, to illustrate the point that we shouldn\u2019t even be living.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHey, gentlemen, we would need to be sensitive to the times; we need to live within the average of the people that we\u2019re governing, and so on and so forth, and knock off the waste and the irrelevancies, so to speak.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Speaking about the cash transfer programme designed to lessen the impact of subsidy elimination, Soludo claimed that it was impossible to digitally transfer funds to the most impoverished people, the majority of whom are unable to open bank accounts since the designated recipients of the cash transfers could not be located in the countryside. According to Daily trust.<\/p>\n<p>In order to ensure that all beneficiaries at the subnational level could be easily accessed, he claimed that NEC decided that the states should create their own registers using both formal and informal methods.<\/p>\n<p>We have to deal with the issue that we lack a reliable registry, he stated.<\/p>\n<p>Soludo said that the current National Social Register failed an integrity test because it was referred to by several attendees as \u201cbogus\u201d and \u201cfathom\u201d during the meeting.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI believe there was practically complete agreement among members of the council today. The credibility of the so-called National Social Register is seriously in doubt. We have concerns about how the names on the register came to be, and one of the queries I\u2019m sure I hear is, \u201cWhere is it for the most vulnerable group?\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The poorest 25% of Nigerians are generally, if not entirely, without access to banking services and your phone. It is among the most impoverished members of our society.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhat we have presented here are ideas that the federal, state, and local levels of government will be encouraged to execute in accordance with their different fiscal spaces and budgetary capacity.<\/p>\n<p>I want to emphasise that there will be a sizable fiscal surplus for the federal government, states, and local governments. We suggested that you implement cash transfers, subject to your financial capacity and unique circumstances. Some people may be able to implement one cash transfer, while others may be able to implement ten. Some people might be able to complete 20 as the situation may be. It depends on how capable they are.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPerhaps some who aren\u2019t even now in a position to do it. As an illustration, consider a state that owes workers salary arrears that date back three or four years.
