Benzoyl peroxide is used to treat acne. It works as an antiseptic to reduce the number of germs (bacteria) on the surface of your skin.<\/p>\n
It\u2019s usually one of the first treatments recommended for mild to moderate acne.<\/p>\n
It comes as a gel or face wash containing 5% benzoyl peroxide. This is available to buy from pharmacies or shops.<\/p>\n
According to NHS, benzoyl peroxide is sometimes mixed with potassium hydroxyquinoline sulfate. This is an antimicrobial ingredient that kills micro-organisms on your skin. It\u2019s sold in pharmacies as Quinoderm cream.<\/p>\n
Some benzoyl peroxide products are available on prescription only. This is because they contain other medicines such as antibiotics or retinoids (exfoliants).<\/p>\n
Many popular skincare brands also make products that contain benzoyl peroxide, but at a lower strength. These are available to buy in pharmacies, supermarkets and shops.<\/p>\n
Key facts <\/strong><\/p>\n1. Benzoyl peroxide 5% gel or wash takes around 4 weeks to start working. It can take 2 to 4 months to have full effect.<\/p>\n
2. You\u2019ll usually use it 1 or 2 times a day.<\/p>\n
3. The most common side effect is skin irritation. If this happens it\u2019s better to use it less often at first, then build up as your skin gets used to it.<\/p>\n
4. Try to avoid strong sunlight while using benzoyl peroxide gel. Use an oil-free sunscreen with SPF30 or above. Ask a pharmacist for advice on which sunscreen is right for your skin type.<\/p>\n
5. Keep benzoyl peroxide away from your hair and clothes, as it can bleach and discolour them.<\/p>\n
Who can use benzoyl peroxide<\/strong><\/p>\nMost adults and children aged 12 years and over can use benzoyl peroxide.<\/p>\n
Who may not be able to use benzoyl peroxide<\/strong><\/p>\nBenzoyl peroxide is not suitable for some people.<\/p>\n
To make sure it\u2019s safe for you, tell your doctor before using this medicine if you:<\/p>\n
1. have ever had an allergic reaction to benzoyl peroxide or any other medicine<\/p>\n
2. have damaged or broken skin where you need to use the treatment<\/p>\n
3. have very bad acne with nodules (large, hard lumps that build up beneath the surface of the skin and can be painful) or cysts (large, pus-filled lumps that look similar to boils), these need to be treated by a doctor to avoid scarring.<\/p>\n
