Queen Mother of the Greater Accra Tomato Transporters and Sellers Association, Otumfuor Charity, has blamed the surge of tomato prices on the volatile situation currently in Burkina Faso.<\/strong><\/p>\nBurkina Faso, Ghana\u2019s neighbour in the North has been a major supplier of tomatoes,\u00a0a staple in the Ghanaian diet, used in various dishes to add flavour and nutrients for years until the halt in recent weeks.<\/p>\n
According to The National Tomato Transporters and Sellers Association, they are currently experiencing increasing difficulties in transporting tomatoes from Burkina Faso due to ensuing conflict in that country.<\/p>\n
Otumfuor Charity in an interview with Citi News explained that Ghana, like many other countries in the region, relies heavily on Burkina Faso for tomato imports during the period from December to May when the country\u2019s own tomato harvest is not available.<\/p>\n
\u201cThere is indeed a shortage of tomatoes, but it is not intentional. In Ghana, from December to May, we do not harvest tomatoes. The tomatoes we consume are from Burkina Faso during this period. This year there have been ongoing conflicts in Burkina Faso, so entering the country has become increasingly difficult. Every year we go for tomatoes, but the prices don\u2019t increase to this extent. This year has been different,\u201d she pointed out<\/p>\n
As a result of the conflict, there has also been a shortage of tomatoes, leading to higher prices according to the Queen mother of the Tomato traders in Accra.<\/p>\n
\u201cRight now, a crate of tomatoes goes for over 130,000 CFA. The high exchange rate is also not helping matters. You also need to pay for transportation, so if you borrowed money for your trade, you need to pay for the debt,\u201d she lamented<\/p>\n
This situation has had a significant impact on the tomato transporters and sellers in Ghana. They are faced with increased transportation costs and the challenges of travelling through conflict zones to bring tomatoes into the country.<\/p>\n
Bintu Mohammed, a tomato trader who shared her story recounted the dangers she faced while transporting tomatoes from Burkina Faso.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt takes three days to harvest tomatoes and bring them into Ghana. When it gets here, some of the tomatoes start to rot. There are conflicts where we go to buy the tomatoes. It takes heart to travel and come back. We sometimes do not eat or drink water for the three days we travel. Human beings are beheaded before our eyes. They do not attack Ghanaians. If you show them your Ghana card, they will let you go. We do not understand the conflict. We are only there to buy tomatoes to come and sell here,\u201d she revealed.<\/p>\n
The surge in tomato prices has also had a ripple effect on other sectors of the economy. Restaurants and food vendors have had to adjust their prices to keep up with the increase in tomato costs, leading to higher food prices for consumers.<\/p>\n
The government of Ghana through the Ministry of Food and Agriculture is yet to issue a statement on a lasting solution to the price hike.<\/p>\n
In the past, the Ministry had assured the public that the government was working to find a solution to the problem by looking at ways to increase local tomato production and explore alternative sources of tomato imports to alleviate the shortage.<\/p>\n
