{"id":58955,"date":"2023-04-18T13:25:13","date_gmt":"2023-04-18T13:25:13","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/04\/18\/gamey-criticises-ofori-attas-approach-to-new-debt-restructuring\/"},"modified":"2023-04-18T13:25:13","modified_gmt":"2023-04-18T13:25:13","slug":"gamey-criticises-ofori-attas-approach-to-new-debt-restructuring","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/04\/18\/gamey-criticises-ofori-attas-approach-to-new-debt-restructuring\/","title":{"rendered":"Gamey criticises Ofori-Atta&#8217;s approach to new debt restructuring"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"518\" height=\"349\"  alt=\"\" title=\"gamey\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/gamey.webp\" data- class=\"entry-thumb lazyload\"\/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"518\" height=\"349\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/gamey.webp\"   alt=\"\" title=\"gamey\"\/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p><strong>Former Deputy Employment Minister Austin Akufo Gamey says the approach the Minister of Finance, Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta, and the government, by extension, are using to implement the new debt restructuring programme \u201cis not good enough\u201d.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf I were the Minister of Finance, my approach will be 100 percent different from what they are doing now,\u201d he said on <em>Midday Live <\/em>on <strong>TV3 <\/strong>on Tuesday, April 18.<\/p>\n<p>The government is considering what it calls \u2018Proposed Alternative Offer for Pension Funds\u2019 but many consider this a new debt exchange programme.<\/p>\n<p>Already, Organised Labour is agitated and has served notice that the agreement reached in December for government not to include workers\u2019 pensions in such a programme still stands.<\/p>\n<p>The Ministry of Finance is said to have written to the Board of Trustees of Pension Funds to request participation in the new programme.<\/p>\n<h5>\u2018Game plan\u2019<\/h5>\n<p>Speaking on the issue, Mr Gamey, who is currently a labour consultant and Chief Executive Officer of Gamey and Gamey Academy of Mediation, said the proposal is only a \u201cgame plan\u201d being employed by government as part of the conditionalities of the International Monetary Fund (IMF).<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is a strategy they have to deploy to meet some of the requirements on the International Monetary Fund,\u201d he stated.<\/p>\n<p>He said the government is latching on to this last straw in a way that will not seem like they are touching pension funds.<\/p>\n<p>But he said all over the world, pensions are \u201ca major lifeblood of workers\u201d, therefore, it will be difficult to convince workers with the current approach.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe don\u2019t do that to pension funds,\u201d the former North Tongu Member of Parliament stressed.<\/p>\n<p>He said there should be more engagement with labour in order to find a solution to this.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"twitter-follow-button\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/kwame_amoh?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\" data-show-count=\"false\">Follow @kwame_amoh<\/a><\/p>\n<\/p><\/div>\n<p><script async src=\"\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Former Deputy Employment Minister Austin Akufo Gamey says the approach the Minister of Finance, Kenneth Nana Yaw Ofori-Atta, and the government, by extension, are using to implement the new debt restructuring programme \u201cis not good enough\u201d. \u201cIf I were the Minister of Finance, my approach will be 100 percent different from what they are doing [&hellip;]<\/p>\n","protected":false},"author":1,"featured_media":58956,"comment_status":"open","ping_status":"open","sticky":false,"template":"","format":"standard","meta":{"footnotes":""},"categories":[19],"tags":[],"class_list":["post-58955","post","type-post","status-publish","format-standard","has-post-thumbnail","category-business"],"yoast_head":"<!-- This site is optimized with the Yoast SEO plugin v24.2 -
