{"id":58539,"date":"2023-04-17T12:40:21","date_gmt":"2023-04-17T12:40:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/04\/17\/pensioner-bondholders-threaten-to-resume-picketing\/"},"modified":"2023-04-17T12:40:21","modified_gmt":"2023-04-17T12:40:21","slug":"pensioner-bondholders-threaten-to-resume-picketing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/2023\/04\/17\/pensioner-bondholders-threaten-to-resume-picketing\/","title":{"rendered":"Pensioner bondholders threaten to resume picketing"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><\/p>\n<div>\n<div class=\"td-post-featured-image\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"348\"  alt=\"\" title=\"ofori-atta-pensioners-1140x570.webp\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/ofori-atta-pensioners-1140x570-1.webp\" data- class=\"entry-thumb lazyload\"\/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" width=\"696\" height=\"348\" class=\"entry-thumb\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/ofori-atta-pensioners-1140x570-1.webp\"   alt=\"\" title=\"ofori-atta-pensioners-1140x570.webp\"\/><\/noscript><\/div>\n<p><strong>The Pensioner Bondholders Forum has served notice of resuming picketing at the Ministry of Finance if all outstanding coupons and principals are not paid by Friday, April 28.<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>They said the resumption of their action will \u201cfurther press home our demand for the payment of all coupons and principals in arrears, and an end to payment delays\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Pensioners including a former Chief Justice, Sophia Akuffo, in February began a mass action against the Finance Ministry for initially including their bonds in the Domestic Debt Exchange Programme (DDEP).<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_280505\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-280505\" style=\"width: 1080px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Sophia-Akuffo-pensions.jpg\" data- class=\"size-full wp-image-280505 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-280505\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/04\/Sophia-Akuffo-pensions.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1080\" height=\"608\"  \/><\/noscript><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-280505\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Former Chief Justice Sophia Akuffo joined the pensioners in picketing at the Finance Ministry<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>Their days of picketing resulted in their exemption from the Programme, making it voluntary for them.<\/p>\n<p>However, those who opted out of the DDEP have complained of delays in the payment of their coupons and principals.<\/p>\n<p>Agreed dates of payment have been missed while some have remained outstanding.<\/p>\n<p>The latest date of Friday, April 21 has stirred controversy after the Convener of the Forum, Dr Adu Antwi, opted to convince members for a one-week extension.<\/p>\n<p>But he said after meeting the members and reporting back to the Deputy Minister of Finance, Abena Osei Asare, via a text message, a press release by the Ministry seems to have put out \u201cmisleading\u201d facts.<\/p>\n<p><span id=\"page36R_mcid6\" class=\"markedContent\"><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201cAfter the meeting, the Convener sent<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">this<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">text message<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">at 4:25pm to the Deputy<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Minister through two<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">(2)<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">of the Ministry\u2019s staff who were involved in facilitating<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">the meeting:<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">\u201c<\/span><em><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">This is to confirm the one week extension I proposed at the<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">meeting,<\/span><\/em> <em><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">to the 21st April 2023 deadline demanded by the Pensioner Bondholders Forum<\/span><\/em> <em><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">for the payment of outstanding coupons and principals.<\/span> <span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\">Please convey the <\/span><\/em><span dir=\"ltr\" role=\"presentation\"><em>confirmation to the Deputy Minister. Thanks.
