He described how he found out about his father’s kidnapping about four hours before Nigeria’s 2018 World Cup match against Argentina in an interview with Dubai Eye 103.8 Sport.

Mikel explained how a family member had gotten in touch with him and given him instructions to phone the kidnappers at a particular number. I was confused. I did not know what to do but, in the end, I knew that I could not let 180 million Nigerians down. I had to shut it out of my head and go and represent my country first. I could not even inform the coaches or NFF staff and only a very tight circle of my friends knew.

“I was told that they would shoot my dad instantly if I reported to the authorities or told anybody. I also did not want to discuss it with the coach [Gernot Rohr] because I did not want my issue to become a distraction to him or the rest of the team on the day of such an important game. As much as I wanted to discuss it with the coach, I could not.

“The abductors then started calling the families to demand a ransom of N10 million but the operatives acting on intelligence information swooped on them. A gun duel ensued which forced the hoodlums to abandon their victims inside the forest and they were promptly rescued.

https://googleads.g.doubleclick.net/pagead/ads?gdpr=0&us_privacy=1—&client=ca-pub-9434304889961706&output=html&h=280&adk=3343016698&adf=1057766360&pi=t.aa~a.64661948~i.11~rp.4&w=780&fwrn=4&fwrnh=100&lmt=1680985930&num_ads=1&rafmt=1&armr=3&sem=mc&pwprc=8935211502&ad_type=text_image&format=780×280&url=https%3A%2F%2Ftrunewsreport.com%2Fsports%2Fthey-pointed-a-gun-to-my-fathers-head-obi-mikel-reveals-why-he-paid-ridiculous-amount-to-kidnappers.html&host=ca-host-pub-2644536267352236&fwr=0&pra=3&rh=195&rw=780&rpe=1&resp_fmts=3&wgl=1&fa=27&uach=WyJXaW5kb3dzIiwiMTQuMC4wIiwieDg2IiwiIiwiMTExLjAuNTU2My4xNDciLFtdLGZhbHNlLG51bGwsIjY0IixbWyJHb29nbGUgQ2hyb21lIiwiMTExLjAuNTU2My4xNDciXSxbIk5vdChBOkJyYW5kIiwiOC4wLjAuMCJdLFsiQ2hyb21pdW0iLCIxMTEuMC41NTYzLjE0NyJdXSxmYWxzZV0.&dt=1680985930491&bpp=4&bdt=1848&idt=-M&shv=r20230405&mjsv=m202304040101&ptt=9&saldr=aa&abxe=1&cookie=ID%3De9923a1d39c8a054-2245222e18dc008c%3AT%3D1676464494%3ART%3D1676464494%3AS%3DALNI_MZL559Gfh5mmEbGQkXjcSLKaW-5XQ&gpic=UID%3D00000bdaa6b75c16%3AT%3D1676464494%3ART%3D1680972126%3AS%3DALNI_MbgN9-3ffg-uUSCV1pbeenlMCi1ww&prev_fmts=0x0%2C1200x280%2C1200x600%2C780x280&nras=3&correlator=3435032071447&frm=20&pv=1&ga_vid=714513946.1676464493&ga_sid=1680985929&ga_hid=1965298491&ga_fc=1&u_tz=0&u_his=50&u_h=1080&u_w=1920&u_ah=1032&u_aw=1920&u_cd=24&u_sd=1&dmc=8&adx=367&ady=2139&biw=1903&bih=872&scr_x=0&scr_y=253&eid=44788218%2C44759842%2C44759926%2C44759875%2C31073641&oid=2&pvsid=968652783975556&tmod=2131087818&uas=0&nvt=1&ref=https%3A%2F%2Ftrunewsreport.com%2Fauthor%2Fstephen&fc=1408&brdim=0%2C0%2C0%2C0%2C1920%2C0%2C1920%2C1032%2C1920%2C872&vis=1&rsz=%7C%7Cs%7C&abl=NS&fu=128&bc=31&ifi=5&uci=a!5&btvi=2&fsb=1&xpc=tdgLnK2Yhc&p=https%3A//trunewsreport.com&dtd=409

“They [the kidnappers] said listen, we know, it is Mikel he would pay.
