Gregory Onyango Obonyo, was a principal at Kanga Onditi Mixed Secondary School in Migori County until one when the Teachers Service Commission sacked him, one year into his tenure as head of the school.<\/p>\n
The core reason why Mr Obonyo was sacked is that he spend close to two hours with a one one of his female student in his residence contrary to TSC\u2019s Code of Conduct and Ethics of Teachers.<\/p>\n
According to court papers, it all began on the evening of January 13, 2019 when the principal was approached by two teachers ( the senior teacher and the boarding master ) in of the student.<\/p>\n
The student claimed that she was sick and had spent the whole day in the dormitory sleeping. Since the school had no dispensary, a nurse\/matron nor a female teacher, the principal instructed the school\u2019s watchman to fetch painkillers for the girl.<\/p>\n
Thereafter, Mr Obonyo avers that he instructed his nephew whom he stayed with to give the girl some food. Obonyo argued that he immediately retired to bed after instructing his nephew to feed the girl.<\/p>\n
On the contrary, the court heard that the girl spend some considerable time in the Principal\u2019s residence(two hours). She was allowed to cook some food by herself and carried some to her dormitory.<\/p>\n
Before the court, Mr Obonyo admitted to allowing the girl cook food in his residence arguing that it was a small act of mercy in effort to provide his student with health, security and safety.<\/p>\n
According to TSC Act 2015 22 (2), a teacher shall not sent learners to their personal residences for whatever reason. As a result of his admission to the issues raised, the Labor and Employment court upheld the sacking of the principal by TSC. Obonyo is now jobless and will not receive gratuity from the state, only a certificate of service.<\/p>\n
