Costume designer\u00a0Ruth E. Carter\u00a0just became the first Black woman to win two\u00a0Oscars.<\/p>\n
Carter won her second Oscar for\u00a0costume design for \u201cBlack Panther: Wakanda Forever.\u201d In 2019, she became the first Black woman to win an Oscar in the category for her work on the first \u201cBlack Panther\u201d film.<\/p>\n
In her acceptance speech, Carter thanked the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences for \u201crecognizing this superhero that is a Black woman.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cShe endures, she loves, she overcomes,\u201d said Carter, dressed in a striking goldenrod gown, in an homage to the Black women she\u2019s dressed in her work. \u201cShe is every woman in this film. She is my mother.\u201d<\/p>\n
Carter told the audience that her mother died earlier in the week at 101.<\/p>\n
\u201cThis film prepared me for this moment,\u201d she said, and then referenced the late \u201cBlack Panther\u201d star\u00a0Chadwick Boseman, who died in 2020, and asked him to \u201cplease take care of mom.\u201d<\/p>\n
The acclaimed costumer was previously nominated for Oscars for her work in Spike Lee\u2019s \u201cMalcolm X\u201d and Steven Spielberg\u2019s \u201cAmistad.\u201d<\/p>\n
Only four other Black Oscar winners have earned multiple statues in competitive categories \u2013 actors Denzel Washington and Mahershala Ali and sound mixers Willie D. Burton and Russell Williams II.<\/p>\n
