Evarline Okello sobs uncontrollably as she confesses to me that, despite paying a pastor to pray for her, she is hundreds of dollars in debt.<\/strong><\/h2>\n
She can no longer support her four children because she lives in a small shack in Kibera, a large slum in Nairobi, the capital of Kenya.<\/p>\n
As we speak on the phone, Ms. Okello informs me that she hasn\u2019t received any pay in months.<\/p>\n
She was eager to see the pastor after hearing that his prayers could improve people\u2019s lives. He demanded $115 (\u00a396; 15,000 Kenyan shillings) from her.<\/p>\n
– –<\/span> \n<\/p>\n
This is referred to as a \u201cseed offering\u201d: a monetary gift made to a religious figure with a particular goal in mind.<\/p>\n

Ms. Okello obtained the loan from a friend who did so on her behalf. She had been assured that this pastor\u2019s prayers would be so effective that she would receive a refund of her investment in just one week.<\/p>\n
Yet the miracle never materialized. In fact, she claims, things grew worse. Due to unpaid interest, the loan her friend took out has ballooned.<\/p>\n
She currently owes more than $300 and is unsure of how she will repay it. She no longer has a job, and her friend has stopped speaking to her.<\/p>\n

\u201cThings have become so difficult I have lost all hope,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n
Kenya has been hit hard by the cost-of-living crisis. Food prices rose by almost 16% in the 12 months before September 2022, according to Kenya\u2019s National Bureau of Statistics, while World Bank figures show the number of Kenyans out of work has more than doubled in the past seven years.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople are living very desperate lives,\u201d says Dr Gladys Nyachieo, a sociologist at Multimedia University of Kenya.<\/p>\nKenya has seen protests over the rising cost of living<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
This has increased their desire for supernatural solutions, she says, and many are now willing to pay for a miracle, even if they have to borrow the money.<\/p>\n
\u201cPeople are being told that God doesn\u2019t want them to remain poor. So they plant a seed,\u201d she tells me.<\/p>\n
The Prosperity Gospel, which holds that God rewards faith with wealth and health, is the source of the practice.<\/p>\n
It is suggested that believers demonstrate their faith by giving money, which it is said will be returned to them many times over by God.<\/p>\n
The Prosperity Gospel originated in America and gained popularity there in the early 20th century.<\/p>\n
Nigerian pastors began traveling to the US in the late 1970s and early 1980s to learn more about it. In the early 2000s, American evangelists like Reinhard Bonnke, who attracted sizable crowds from Lagos to Nairobi, helped it gain popularity across Africa. Popularity is still increasing today.<\/p>\nAmerican evangelist Reinhard Bonnke, who died in 2019, was hugely popular in Nigeria<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
Dr Nyachieo also points to another factor tempting people into debt \u2013 the offers of loans that regularly pop up on Kenyans\u2019 mobile phones. \u201cPeople just apply and get the money,\u201d she says.<\/p>\n
That\u2019s what happened to 26-year-old Dennis Opili. Feeling disheartened after more than three years looking for work, he asked a friend for help.<\/p>\n
\u201cHe advised me that there is a church where you go and they pray for you. You give a certain offering, then they pray for you, then you can secure a job,\u201d Mr Opili says.<\/p>\n
He was told to make a donation every Sunday for three months and gave a total of about $180.<\/p>\n

When his savings ran out he borrowed about $120 from cash apps and from friends.<\/p>\n
\u201cI believed in what the pastor told me, that I\u2019ll be able to secure a job. So I didn\u2019t have any problems with borrowing, because I thought eventually I\u2019ll be able to pay off the money.\u201d<\/p>\n
But when no job appeared, Mr Opili began to suspect that he had been tricked.<\/p>\n
\u00a0<\/p>\nDennis Opili borrowed from cash apps to pay a pastor<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
Soon he was being pursued by the loan companies for payments.<\/p>\n
\u201cSometimes I\u2019d just be just sitting somewhere, relaxing, thinking about other things. Then somebody calls you, they want you to pay them back their money, and you don\u2019t have anything to pay them with,\u201d he says.<\/p>\n
\u201cI was scared because you don\u2019t know what action they could take if you don\u2019t pay them. You don\u2019t know whether they can sue you, or whether they might take you to police custody.\u201d<\/p>\n
Luckily he has now managed to find piecemeal work, which has enabled him to pay back part of the money, both to the loan companies and his friends.<\/p>\n
\u201cI still very much believe in God,\u201d he says. \u201cAll I have to do is just be a little more careful.\u201d<\/p>\n
Pressured into giving<\/strong><\/h2>\n
It\u2019s not only in Kenya that people are going into debt in the hope of a miracle. A woman who used to attend a Nigerian church in the US says she and her husband came under crippling financial obligations \u2013 including the expectation to make seed offerings, or \u201csow seed\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cSarah\u201d, as I will call her, asked me not to use her name, or to say which state in the southern US she lives in, for fear of intimidation from the church or its lawyers.<\/p>\n

She says both congregants and local pastors at her former church were expected to give a \u201ctithe\u201d of 10% of their monthly income to finance the church and its leadership in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
And that was in addition to what was called \u201cfirst fruit\u201d \u2013 their entire pay packet of the first month of the year.<\/p>\nUS evangelist Oral Roberts (1918-2009) is known as the father of the Prosperity Gospel<\/strong><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n
Local leaders were set monthly targets, she says, which forced them to put pressure on the congregation to sow seed. Members were told that they would then be blessed by the head pastor in Nigeria.<\/p>\n
Sarah says she saw people paying for \u201cseed money\u201d with their credit cards in church services.<\/p>\n
\u201cI remember one time at the church a lady said: \u2018I have been paying my tithe, and it seems like I still don\u2019t have enough money at the end of the month.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n
The pastor\u2019s response, Sarah says, was to tell people that giving was more important than paying their rent. And she says anyone who questioned why miracles were not happening was told: \u201cYou didn\u2019t pray enough, you didn\u2019t sow seed enough. You didn\u2019t have enough faith.\u201d<\/p>\n
She says her husband was pressured to leave her, because she kept asking questions \u2013 but they both left the church instead.<\/p>\n
Last hope<\/strong><\/h2>\n
So why do others stay in such churches?<\/p>\n
Dr J\u00f6rg Haustein, associate professor of World Christianities at the University of Cambridge, says it is possible to understand why people keep giving when \u201cthe promises are not paying off as directly advertised\u201d.<\/p>\n
For the middle classes and upwardly mobile, like most of those in Sarah\u2019s church, Dr Haustein says the Prosperity Gospel offers \u201can air of economic success and upward mobility that people find attractive\u201d.<\/p>\n
But it can also appeal to those living in poverty, he says.<\/p>\n
\u201cA church that says: \u2018We know that you\u2019re suffering, and we have a practical, attainable solution for you,\u2019 will be more attractive than one that preaches some elusive, systemic change.\u201d<\/p>\n

But why I ask, do people continue to give even when it means going into debt?<\/p>\n
\u201cIs it not like playing the lottery when you don\u2019t have any money?\u201d Dr Haustein asks me.<\/p>\n
\u201cIt\u2019s something that seems remotely affordable because you can borrow a few hundred Kenyan shillings on a phone to invest and see if it helps.<\/p>\n
\u201cOf course, there is an air of desperation as well, it can be the last best hope one has.\u201d<\/p>\n
Back in Kenya, Evarline Okello says the experience hasn\u2019t caused her to abandon her faith.<\/p>\n
\u201cI wouldn\u2019t say that church is bad. The church is good. It is the pastors who are doing wrong. They are the ones who are asking for money.\u201d<\/p>\n
