Fragile and conflict-affected states, home to 1 billion people, are at particular\u00a0risk.<\/p>\n<p>Eleven straight monthly declines have pushed food prices down 19 percent from a peak last March, the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations\u00a0said\u00a0Friday.<\/p>\n<p>As the Chart of the Week shows, inflation-adjusted prices in February remained above than the average level for recent years, though they are now back in line with levels seen before the war in Ukraine. The composition of the\u00a0FAO\u00a0Food Price Index shows that vegetable oils drove the decline in prices, along with dairy and cereals, while sugar and meat are little changed from early last year.<\/p>\n<p>The IMF and other global institutions said in a recent joint statement on food security that governments and donors must step up support for the most vulnerable, facilitate trade and market functioning, and abandon harmful subsidies.<\/p>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"331\"  src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/food-prices-300x194.png\" data- class=\"alignnone  wp-image-283962 lazyload\"\/><noscript><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone  wp-image-283962\" src=\"https:\/\/www.ghanamma.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/03\/food-prices-300x194.png\" alt=\"\" width=\"512\" height=\"331\"  \/><\/noscript><\/p>\n<p>\u201cMore concerted action across these three key areas is needed to prevent a prolonged crisis,\u201d the heads of the FAO, IMF, World Bank, World Food Programme and World Trade Organization said in a Feb. 8\u00a0statement, their third since July on the global food and nutrition security crisis.<\/p>\n<p>The IMF\u2019s new\u00a0Food Shock Window\u00a0has so far supported Guinea, Haiti, Malawi, and Ukraine.
